Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for hours when numerous of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that these practices become not financially viable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
